Tourist satisfaction overview in Harghita County (2023–2025)

The tourism offering of Harghita County between 2023 and 2025 shows an overall favorable picture across the main online review platforms. Based on reviews from Google, Tripadvisor, Booking, Szállás.hu, and Romanian-language opinion sites, the county’s strongest attractions continue to be its natural sights, well-managed family-friendly attractions, and the opportunity for peaceful relaxation in a mountainous environment. The most consistently positive performers are Mini Transylvania Park and Bicaz Gorge, while Băile Tușnad remains steadily well-rated, and reviews of Borsec indicate a clear positive turnaround. The most significant negative shift is related to the Praid salt mine: the loss of this flagship attraction requires a complete rethinking.

A detailed analysis shows that the county’s tourism appeal is fundamentally stable: in the case of most key attractions, visitors continue to highlight the beauty of the landscape, uniqueness, tranquility, family-friendly experiences, and good value for money. Negative feedback typically does not concern the attractions themselves, but rather the surrounding experience environment: parking, accessibility, overcrowding, pedestrian safety, on-site information, and in some cases maintenance or organizational shortcomings. This indicates that the main task for tourism in Harghita County is not to rethink the core product, but to consciously develop the experience environment.

Among the key attractions, Mini Transylvania Park stands out as the most balanced success story. Visitor reviews frequently mention attention to detail, multilingual information, family-friendly infrastructure, and well-organized operations. Similarly, the perception of Bicaz Gorge is consistently positive: the scenery, panorama, and natural experience are strong positives across nearly all platforms, while criticisms mainly relate to traffic and parking. Lake Saint Anne and the Red Lake remain strong attractions, but here “beautiful, but…”-type reviews appear more often, pointing to issues with crowding, access, and on-site comfort.

In the case of Praid, it is important to highlight that the salt mine was previously a strong attraction for family and health tourism, but from 2025 onward a clear negative shift occurred. This represents a turning point in the county’s tourist satisfaction profile: while accommodation providers in the settlement often continue to receive good reviews, the flagship attraction can no longer fulfill its former role. The situation in Praid demonstrates that even a strong accommodation supply cannot fully compensate for the loss of a key attraction if it is central to the destination’s identity. (This clearly illustrates that the long-term tourism appeal of a destination can only be maintained if both the supply/attraction elements and the target groups are diversified.)

Băile Tușnad and Borsec are two of the most interesting resort examples in the county, following different development paths. The overall image of Băile Tușnad is consistently positive: its nature-based environment, balneo and wellness offer, nearby attractions, and calm small-town character remain appealing. However, it is also clear that renovated and well-functioning establishments receive significantly better feedback than older hotel stock. Borsec, on the other hand, is on an improving trajectory: the Fontana SPA center and upgraded accommodations significantly enhance the town’s image, although secondary services (especially restaurants and complementary attractions), as well as evening program options, remain more limited.

Visitor satisfaction can also be clearly interpreted by segments. Domestic tourists are typically service-sensitive: they pay close attention to cleanliness, staff attitude, wellness quality, parking, and value for money. Visitors from Hungary particularly value tranquility, cleanliness, cultural comfort, family-friendly operation, and proximity to nature. Other international visitors tend to reward iconic and unique experiences: distinctive landscapes, easily interpretable attractions, clear information, and well-communicated services. This means that the same location can be successful for different reasons across different target groups.

The accommodation market shows an overall favorable picture. Based on Booking, Szállás.hu, Travelminit, DirectBooking, and Romanian narrative review platforms, smaller renovated guesthouses, apartments, and mountain accommodations perform particularly well in Harghita County. The strongest satisfaction keywords are cleanliness, quietness, friendly staff, good breakfast, easy parking, pleasant surroundings, and well-functioning wellness facilities. The main risks are associated with older hotel stock: outdated rooms, soundproofing issues, maintenance shortcomings, inconsistent food quality, and sometimes unclear operational communication.

Regional differences are also clearly visible. Around Miercurea Ciuc and Odorheiu Secuiesc, satisfaction is driven more by predictability, urban service infrastructure, and reliable operation. In the areas of Red Lake and Harghita Băi, the mountain environment automatically increases the experience value, but seasonal pressure and accessibility can limit satisfaction. In Băile Tușnad and Borsec, a key issue is reducing quality variability so that the positive image of better establishments is not undermined by weaker services.

Overall, the tourist satisfaction profile of Harghita County is strong but not uniform. The county’s greatest assets remain its landscape, nature-based experiences, tranquility, and unique Szekler character. The most important development tasks relate to the conditions of the visitor experience: better on-site information, more organized parking, more consistent service quality, more modern accommodation infrastructure, and more predictable operations. Based on the overall platform picture, Harghita County continues to hold a strong tourism position, especially where natural or cultural attractions are paired with a professional visitor experience.

Methodological note: This summary is based on publicly available ratings and textual reviews from Google/Maps, Tripadvisor, Booking, Szállás.hu, AmFostAcolo, DirectBooking, and Travelminit. Public scores are dynamic, continuously changing indicators, so trend interpretation is based not on mechanical time series but on the analysis of dated reviews, recurring keywords, and cross-platform consistency.
